Easy Oreo Truffles with Gluten-free and Nut-free Substitutions

  • Oreo truffles, or Oreo balls, are a no bake dessert that only require three ingredients! They look and taste impressive but are very easy to make.

These are one of my favorite desserts because I love all things Oreos and chocolate, and they are always a crowd pleaser.

I have close friends who are either gluten-free or nut-free; with easy ingredient swaps, these Oreo truffles can easily be made allergy-friendly. Better yet, the swaps do not make the gluten-free or nut-free versions taste any different than the original truffles!

Ingredients to make Oreo Truffles

  • Oreos / chocolate sandwich cookies – The original Oreo cookies work the best when it comes to these truffles. Make sure not to use Double Stuf, Mega Stuf or The Most Stuf Oreos here. To make the Oreo truffles gluten-free, use Gluten Free Oreos.
  • Cream cheese – I typically use the regular full fat cream cheese for this recipe.
  • Chocolate – Use your chocolate preference here. Semi-sweet chocolate chips are what I use most often but I will occasionally use dark chocolate; white chocolate could be used as well. To make these Oreo balls nut-free, use chocolate that is free of nuts and does not have a “may contain nuts” disclaimer to ensure no cross-contamination. I like the Enjoy Life brand mini chocolate chips, chocolate chunks and dark chocolate chips.

 Tips

  • Make sure to triple check that the ingredients you are using are gluten-free and/or nut-free if you intend for these Oreo balls to be allergen-free.
  • Be careful when removing the melted chocolate from the microwave because the bowl can get very hot.
  • Add colorful sprinkles to make these Oreo truffles appropriate for any holiday: red and green for Christmas, red, white and blue for Memorial Day or the 4th of July, silver or gold for New Year’s, pink and red for Valentine’s Day, green for St. Patrick’s Day, purple and gold for Mardi Gras – you can really get creative!
  • If you melted too much chocolate, you can dip whole Oreos in it for an extra treat! I usually use leftover Oreos from the package because I buy the Party Size or Family Size packs since I make these so often but recently tried dipping the Mint Cream Oreos. They tasted like a Thin Mint and I will definitely be “accidentally” melting too much chocolate the next time I make these Oreo Balls so I can I can make chocolate-covered mint Oreos again! Leave your favorite fun Oreo flavor in the comments so I can try another chocolate covered com

Notes

  • When making food that is allergy-friendly, always, always, always double check the ingredient lists to ensure you are cautious in your preparation so no cross-contamination occurs. I keep all of my supplies for nut-free baking separate and labeled where possible to ensure what I make is truly safe to eat for my friends with allergies.
  • You can mix up this recipe by using different flavored Oreos, like Mint or Birthday Cake. Just ensure the Oreos you use are not Double Stuf, Mega Stuf or The Most Stuf because it will throw off the cookie to filling ratio when blending with the cream cheese.
